Are you socially unacceptable?
Have you watched The Social Dilemma?
I watched this Netflix documentary a few months ago now and it really got me thinking. It also started a great discussion with the people I watched it with. From it, I realised how much of my life I was losing by aimlessly scrolling and I was shocked at my usage time per day. As a Mum, but also so many Mum's I work with, often the main thing that we struggle with is not enough time. Well.... about 4 hours a day I was on my phone!
Anyway fast forward a few months and I thought I would share with you my experience after this because the biggest change I made was to turn off the majority of my notifications.
I have discovered a lot more time, ridiculous as it sounds but I have seriously noticed me having a lot more time plus I am not glued to my phone all the time.
But as you know I am always honest with you all... there have been some downsides. I think enjoying my new found time has meant I have distanced myself from social media more... not the best thing as my whole business is run from here but it has led to me missing some notifications and being overwhelmed with all I need to catch up on when I do go on. But this was easy to deal with relatively quickly by sorting out planned time for social media. What I dislike is the "need" that social media platforms push upon us (esp if you are running a business page) to respond quickly. I have stats that are shown to all with regards to how quickly I respond. Is there really a need for this? Many of you have messaged me and you will see my auto-reply is "I am a working Mum too, so I will get back to you as soon as I can". This may be the same day but it may be a day or 2 later.
But is this now socially unacceptable?
Do you wait to see that tick turn blue to show it has been read and then get frustrated they haven't replied immediately? I know I've done it!
What it has led to, is me deciding on a compromise. My business is mainly run on Facebook, so I have turned FB notifications on and literally, everything else is off. But because of my new found time away from the screen, I am now not looking at my phone every 5 minutes.
If you haven't watched it I would recommend the Social Dilemma as it just gives you food for thought.
Enjoy everyone z
